Should Biden Declare a Climate Emergency?

Updated: Aug 16, 2022

Given Congress' recent failure to pass legislation on climate change, many activists are calling on President Biden to declare a climate emergency. If he were to do so, it would open funding options to help the US transition away from fossil fuels to green energy. However, we could expect such a declaration to trigger potentially successful judicial challenges from republican-led states and the fossil-fuel industry.

Because climate change is advancing at a more rapid pace than scientists originally projected, many environmentalists are calling for Biden to issue the emergency declaration anyway, and they might be right.

Let's imagine a best-case scenario where Biden uses his executive power to take action. New funding streams for green-energy projects accelerate transformation. The court challenges may come, but in the meantime US voters have recognized the gravity of our planetary crisis. Citizens vote in the midterm elections for representatives that also recognize the need to protect the environment, and so they accomplish what has thus far eluded the 117th Congress.

If you like the sound of that, let's do it! Let's call for Biden to declare a climate emergency now. Let's vote green in November. Let's make sure that the US and its allies are not at the mercy of oil-rich oligarchies to keep the lights on. And by doing all of that, let's ensure a stable future for our children and the other creatures that share our planet.

I think Biden is just as useless about getting anything done as Obama was and he is more irritating. I read somewhere that the only way he will get re-elected is if Trump runs against him in 2024. Obama sounded good, and he promised to work with the Republicans. I thought he might actually do it but either he lied about what he was going to do or he didn't know how to actually do it when the time came. The only Republicans who can do anything are as reactionary as Trump and Clarence Thomas. I'm disgusted with the whole political process. The Republican governors are a real problem. We have to elect a new governor in November…

Bob always tells Beth that she has the deciding vote because usually we cancel each other out. On this last primary, I think we agreed on a few things - I told him that one of the Republican candidates for governor was endorsed by Hogan (present Republican governor) and I think he voted for her. He has made derogatory comments about the other candidate (who won - and was endorsed by Trump)

There was a petitions that was sent yesterday, and I signed it. It is necessary.

I wish I can contribute more like you and your husband do, like at least get a hybrid car, more high efficient direct vent gas heater and a heat pump. But that costs money.

At least I have a smaller car that get decent fuel mileage.

Change will happen when there is a dire need to, like the pandemic. Bit there will be diehards that will not listen.

Yes, that is true. We do the best we can, but we need our leaders to step up. They have the power to make the change happen.
